Autumn 2005
Two one act plays
'INCIDENT AT VICHY'
INCIDENT AT VICHY earned a nomination as best drama in the NODA awards.
We were not the outright winners but a nomination puts us up there amongst the best
By Arthur Miller
Director: Jill Ross
Performance dates: Thursday 27th - Saturday 29th October at 7.30 pm
The play is set in Vichy, France in 1942. A motley group of people suspected of being Jewish are arrested and brought to what is described as 'a place of detention'. One by one they are summoned for interview/ interrogation and not seen again, except As they wait, and the tension rises, of course they talk to one another. The conversation leads to a new self knowledge for some which results in a moving and highly dramatic climax.
The play was written for an all male cast. However, our production will have an all female cast, as race is the issue here, not gender, and the characters are interesting as individual human beings with varying beliefs, ideals, aspirations and fears, not as representatives of their sex.
Despite the apparently grim subject - the matter of the play 'Incident at Vichy' is ultimately an affirmative piece of theatre which has something serious and worthwhile to say about human nature and the human condition.and
'THERMAL UNDERWEAR'
By Andrew Davies
Director: Keely Beresford
Performance dates: Thursday 27th - Saturday 29th October at 7.30 pm
A comedy about a Ruby Wedding Anniversary. A daughter arranges a celebration for her parents' 40th wedding anniversary. A couple of guests fail to arrive, while all is not well in her own marriage and a creaking floorboard steals the show! It has a cast of 3 men and 3 women - one female 60-ish, one male 60-ish, two females 30-40s, two males 30-40s. The characters are fairly normal! Although the 60-ish male and female are quite a couple, think Victor Meldrew meets Hyacinth Bouquet...
